This intermediate to advanced course offers dedicated studio time for ceramic artists looking to deepen their practice while working independently. Designed as a guided open-studio environment, this program provides space for you to pursue your own projects and ideas with the support of an experienced mentor. Individualized feedback will help you refine your conceptual direction, strengthen design choices, and push your technical and creative boundaries.
Guided Open-Studios is an ideal opportunity for artists who are not currently enrolled in the C•A•R•P program, but still want regular access to our fully equipped studio and professional guidance. Whether you are developing a new body of work, experimenting with form and surface, or preparing for an exhibition, this course supports you in moving your practice forward with intention and clarity.
Participants should have prior ceramics experience and feel comfortable working with clay independently.
All materials are provided for this class, however, students must purchase any additional clay directly from JAC to use in the studio. The cost is $50 per 25 lb bag and includes all glazing and firing service fees. Any clay purchased elsewhere cannot be fired at JAC. Unlimited access to the ceramics studio during Open Studio Hours is included for the duration of the class.
Who This Class Is For:
– Intermediate to advanced students with prior clay experience. Students with a specific goal or intention that requires an instructor’s advice, but enough experience to work independently.
By the end of the course, students will:
– Have a better understanding on how to work through creative problem solving
– Have an ability to discuss and offer feedback to other students
– Have a better understanding of how and why you are creating the work you are making
Materials Provided:
– First bag of clay, glazes, and firing
– Shared studio tools and Open Studio access
Supplemental Supplies (optional):
– Experimental carving/ mark-making tools
– Non ceramics materials you may be incorporating into your work (i.e. fishing wire, shells, rocks, etc.
Please bring your own apron. Additional clay ($50/bag) must be purchased through JAC.
Outside clay is not permitted.
