This lecture will explore why it is important for artists to engage across disciplines, especially amid growing distrust between the humanities and the sciences. Robleto argues that these divisions carry a cost, and the lecture will examine the reasons and methods for crossing them. The techniques and questions he devises are grounded not only in abstract concepts but also in personal, emotional experiences—such as the consequences of a heart surgeon disconnecting from the heart’s spiritual history, or a glaciologist unable to express grief over melting glaciers. Engaging in such work can open up new artistic strategies and help refine the scientific questions.
To illustrate this, the lecture will survey his career across media, including sculpture, print, film, field interviews, and sound work, featuring examples from collaborations with heart surgeons, astronomers, and neuroengineers. A highlight of the session will be a live playback of his experimental archival sound work. These haunting, extremely rare sound samples reveal unexpected insights into acts of memory, love, and loss, and were acquired through his distinctive collaborative methods.
