Did you know that artificial light can disrupt the delicate courtship of fireflies? AThis summer, the Norman Bird Sanctuary is partnering with the Owens Institute at Harvard University for an important study on firefly populations, breeding behaviors, and the ecological impacts of light pollution.

You are invited to step into the “living laboratory” after hours for a special night hike led by one of the project’s researchers. You’ll explore field and forest boundaries to witness firefly displays while learning about preserving natural darkness and why it is critical to their survival.

This event is for ages 10+. Suitable for those comfortable navigating uneven trail terrain in love light. Red headlamps are recommended and will be provided if needed to ensure a safe, dark-sky-friendly experience. Please meet at the Welcome Center promptly at 8 p.m.
